I&#8217;m Ryan Clark, an independent game developer probably best known for designing the game\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/necrodancer.com\/\"><em>Crypt of the NecroDancer<\/em><\/a>. Check out my other exploits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1984:<\/strong>\u00a0Dad taught me to code in BASIC when I was 6, on our Apple IIe. I made terrible text and ASCII art games for a while.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1990-1995:\u00a0<\/strong>Dabbled in QBasic, Pascal, and C++ as I got older. I made terrible line drawing games about nuclear apocalypses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1998:\u00a0<\/strong>Got a job coding accounting software in Visual Basic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1999:\u00a0<\/strong>Started making DirectX games in Visual Basic and created a (now defunct) website to help others learn how to do the same. Made less terrible games about space combat and galactic trading, but never finished them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2000:\u00a0<\/strong>Finished my bachelor&#8217;s degree in Microbiology! So useful \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li><strong>2004:<\/strong>\u00a0Created the Game Programming Wiki (which went offline in 2016 after 12 years of service). My advice to you: If you ever want to get good at something, try teaching it to others! My game dev skills improved dramatically from &#8217;99 to &#8217;04 because I was trying to help other people via these websites.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late 2004:<\/strong>\u00a0Co-founded my first game company &#8220;Grubby Games&#8221;. We created seven games at Grubby Games, three of which were nominated for the Independent Games Festival, and one for the PAX 10. (The most well known were\u00a0<em>Professor Fizzwizzle<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>IncrediBots<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>2009:\u00a0<\/strong>For various reasons, sold Grubby Games to Big Fish Games. Enjoyed making games as an &#8220;Executive Producer&#8221; at Big Fish for 2.5 years, but left just before 2012.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2012:\u00a0<\/strong>Created\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/braceyourselfgames.com\/ryanbio\/earsighted.html\">EarSighted<\/a>, a free app to help visually impaired people train to &#8220;see&#8221; with their ears.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2013:\u00a0<\/strong>Founded Brace Yourself Games and designed my 10th game,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/necrodancer.com\/\"><em>Crypt of the NecroDancer<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2015:\u00a0<\/strong>Created\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn28725-smartwatch-app-detects-epileptic-seizures-and-texts-a-warning\/\">Pebble Seizure Detect<\/a>, a free app that helps people with seizure disorders by detecting seizures and sending GPS coordinates to friends and family.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2016:\u00a0<\/strong>Co-founded\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clarenacademy.org\/\">Claren Academy<\/a> with my ex wife. A technology &amp; creativity focused school, in Vancouver.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2023: <\/strong>Brace Yourself Games has been growing and growing, adding some amazingly talented developers to the team.\u00a0 We are now working on about 8 game projects, and having a ton of fun doing it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I write game industry articles on my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gamasutra.com\/blogs\/author\/RyanClark\/938842\/\">Gamasutra blog<\/a>, I was an advisor for the GDC&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gdconf.com\/conference\/igs.html\">Independent Games Summit<\/a> for 5 years, and I streamed regular game industry analysis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLUPKuAVC8PO7uIGiDCHUZGDNYAyRmW6NC\">YouTube and Twitch<\/a> for 6 years.\u00a0 I&#8217;m frequently a speaker at GDC, PAX, TwitchCon, and other conventions.<\/p>\n<p>If, strangely, you&#8217;d like to know\u00a0<em>even more<\/em>, feel free to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/braceyourselfok\">follow me on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi!
